A traveler’s guide to shopping in Bangkok

Thailand is the uncrowned hub of world shopping. Budget shopping is the one aspect that threw light on the country’s markets. Bangkok thus directly becomes Thailand’s shopping capital. So the next time you’re travelling to Bangkok, these are the places that you should definitely shop at.

1. Night Markets

Bangkok’s night shopping scene is entirely different. Confetti coloured store tops and stalls cooking smoke-emitting noodles…the night’s imagery is beautiful. Nightfall brings the most exotic merchandise to the surface. The one you see above is one of the most famous among them.

This one is a true tourist paradise. Vendors put up on tiny boats sell the best fruits and local produce to the prevalent groups of travellers. They even cook and sell Thai delicacies that are native to these markets. The evident vibes of these markets are something we love, but mind you…it could get very crowded. Taling Chan Market, Bang Ku Wiang Market, Tha Kha, and Damnoen Saduak are some markets that should be on your list.

3. Shopping malls

If you’ve come this far down the Bangkok shopping list, you must already know about the prominently fashionable and vastly labyrinthian shopping malls or Bangkok. Each one is bigger than the other and to write about them would be a task. The views from every mall, don’t forget to check them out. The central world, Siam Paragon, The Emporium, Siam Discovery and MBK are some grand malls that you should check out during your shop-till-you-drop bout. The experience will be so good that it will give you a huge hangover.

4. Chatuchak weekend market

It’s almost a saying now- the words ‘you better bring a big bag to Chachutak, because you never know’. That should tell you the range of choices available there. This market brings you the best makes of local artists, factories and even homemade decor. Exotic is splashed in plain words on each item. Mild bargaining is encouraged too. You’ll find apparel, bags, suits, vinyl records and sometimes maybe even pets. It is not called one of the best shopping experiences in the world for nothing.

5. Pratunam

Pratunam is an entire shopping district with entire streets dedicated to a type of sales line each. Shopping malls pop up at regular intervals too. Hotels will enable you to shop and rest and shop again if you book your stay there. You could spend a week in Pratunam and could still be shopping, it’s that varied.

6. Chinatown Market

Being inside an anime and shopping must be a good idea, don’t you think? Imagine just walking into a neon-lit city filled with a hundred shops. There are many little lanes and tiny streets that are a different world in themselves altogether. There are spice shops, Chinese herbs, dried fruits and nuts, and the usual bags, shoes and leather. The huge number of gold shops are to be checked out too.

7. Bangkok Flower Market

Why don’t you stare at the flower bunches in the pictures above for at least 3 seconds and come back here? Khlong Talad Flower market is full of colours and flower weavers. You could even enjoy a tour around this place, just take your bike and go. Late nights are all the more beautiful.

Now that you know all the nice places to shop, plan a trip to Thailand right away!
