Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has cleared a proposal which will now allow domestic and international airlines to offer voice and data services in the Indian airspace. While this isn’t something new in the airline industry, it is in India. Soon, you will be able to browse the internet and make voice calls once the aircraft hits 3,000 metres altitude above the ground and is at a cruising speed.

Though Indian carriers like Air India, Vistara, AirAsia India, Indigo and Spicejet have already been offering WiFi connectivity in the international routes, they turn the connectivity off upon entering the Indian airspace.
With the approval for voice and internet usage inside flights, airlines can now think of an additional revenue model. While the exact pricing of these two new services is not revealed yet, they don’t come for cheap. You might actually have to pay a hefty price to use it on top of the flight booking charges. This isn’t very welcoming if you are a budget traveller.

There are regulatory processes as well, which are still pending and you can expect a roll-out of the services in 3-4 months. As per a survey conducted by TRAI, 83% of the passengers prefer airlines with an internet connection over regular flights.

On the other hand, if you are the one who likes travelling on flights without the notification pings disturbing you every once in a while, then you might be a little worried.
But, then there is always airplane mode.
