Goodbye old passports! E-passport for Indians is on the way

One of the biggest struggles of going on a vacation is carrying your passport. And, the tiring process that comes with it during the airport check-ins. At times, you even start losing interest in your vacation and start thinking if there’s a way out. You know what? There’s a simpler way in and as per reports, it is soon available to Indian citizens. Say ‘hello’ to the newer, advanced E-passports.

So for beginners, including me, who doesn’t know what an E-passport is, here is an overview.

E-passport or a digital passport or a biometric passport as it is referred to is the digitized version of your ordinary passport and has all the essential data stored in a chip. This data at its very basic will include your biometric information like fingerprints and iris scans.

But why is there a need for E-passport all of a sudden?

The concept of E-passport is not something new. It is already in use worldwide and there are over 100 states using it already. And, there are a lot of advantages opting to an E-passport. Few major points would be its ease of usage and the fact that it can’t be tampered with. So, no more waiting in the queues. You can cruise to your seat directly.

In India, it was in 2008, we issued our first-ever contactless E-passport to the then President, Pratibha Patil. It carried info about the name, date of birth, nationality, fingerprint, and facial biometrics. E-passports of the same kind were supposed to be issued for 8,00,000 other diplomats and government officials by 2010. While this, unfortunately, didn’t happen, there is a new update on the E-passport and we can’t stop getting excited.

“Our embassies and consulates are being connected to the Passport Seva Project worldwide..This will prepare a centralized system connected to the passport service for all of you..Going one step ahead, work is on for issuing of the chip-based e-passport.” – Prime Minister Narendra Modi was quoted saying this at the inaugural ceremony of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) in Varanasi this Tuesday.

So, yes, while the dates are still not out, the news is now officially confirmed and it is only a matter of time till we get our hands on the E-passport. Guess, we are saving paper after all!
