1. Gyro

Gyro or Gyros as it is referred to, is a Greek street food specialty traditionally prepared using meat (pork, chicken, lamb, veal) cooked on a vertical rotisserie and is served wrapped in a pita bread.

Souvlaki is a famous Greek fast food in which small pieces of meat (pork, beef, chicken, lamb, fish) is grilled and served on a skewer. While the dish can be eaten right from the skewer, it is at times served with pita bread, dips, potatoes and lemon.

Made from salted strained yoghurt or diluted yoghurt added to olive oil, cucumber, garlic, salt, vinegar, parsley and thyme – Tzatziki is a white coloured dip served with grilled meat. The dip is normally served cold.

Fresh slices of cucumbers, tomatoes, olives, feta cheese and green bell pepper, seasoned with salt & oregano and dressed with a generous amount of olive oil makes a Greek Salad. Famous worldwide, Greek Salad is often referred to as the farmer’s breakfast.

5. Moussaka

Layered with delicious bechamel sauce, minced meat (lamb or beef) and sweet eggplant – Moussaka is a traditional Greek food. The three layers are cooked separately and then baked together and served hot.

From one layered dish to another. Pastitsio is a baked pasta dish with a layer of tubular pasta bound by cheese & egg in the bottom, ground meat layer in the middle and one more layer of pasta topped with a sauce of bechamel with cheese or egg-based custard.

7. Stifado

Stifado is a type of stew in Greece prepared using a mix of carrots, mushrooms, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, beans, and beef. Either stock or water is used as the base.

8. Saganaki

Saganaki is a pan-fried cheese appetizer which occupies a special place in the Greek cuisine. This beloved dish is easy to make and is served with a squeeze of lemon.

9. Baklava

Baklava is a sweet dessert pastry prepared by layering the dough of filo and filling it with a mixture of chopped nuts held together with honey or syrup.

10. Spanakopita

Stuffed with finely chopped pieces of spinach, onions, feta cheese and egg, Spanakopita is a traditional Greek savoury pastry.

11. Bougatsa

Bougatsa is a popular Greek breakfast pastry. There are two versions of it: the vegetarian version consists of semolina custard and cheese, while the non-vegetarian version consists of minced meat.

12. Loukoumades

Loukoumades is a deep fried dough pastry soaked in a generous amount of syrup, honey or chocolate sauce. The dessert is served with sprinkles of sesame or grated walnuts.

13. Dolmades

Dolmades or Dolma as it is referred to is a stuffed vegetable dish that is very common in the Mediterranean. The general filling of vegetables includes pepper, onion, zucchini, tomato, garlic and eggplant. Alternatively, meat dolmades also exist.

Tiropita is a triangular cheese pie served fresh from the oven. On breaking open, it overflows with delicious feta cheese.
