Montreal goes jazzy

The Montreal Jazz Festival is not just a music festival, it is a piece of heritage that is cherished by locals and music lovers from across the world. Such is the place it holds in the world of music, that the song by band Deep Purple ‘Smoke on the Water’ tells the story of the festival’s first venue that burned down. 2016 will be a special edition of the festival as it celebrates 50 years of popularising Jazz and Switzerland. The festival is held annually along the shores of Lake Geneva and is the second largest in the world.

 Soak in Swiss culture at Lausanne

Along Lake Geneva lies picturesque Lausanne city, a small one but filled with heritage and culture. For the months of July to September, Lausanne becomes the centre of a cultural festival. Music, dance, theatre, classical music, jazz concerts, you name it and Lausanne city has it happening. More than 400 such live shows are put up across the city and the best part of the festival is, all these are free for all!

Swiss National Day

The Swiss celebrate their national day on August 1 and across the country, visitors would find food, races, parades and colourful street shows happening. Check out the Swiss version of wrestling – Schwinger where two men battle it out with bare hands and baggy pants in a ring of sawdust. The winner dusts off the loser’s back! In Gruyeres, one will find a race for goats and an exhibition of the types of Swiss goats. Enjoy the bonfires and fireworks if you are in Switzerland on this day!

Folklore and parades at Moosalp

Moosalp is a region that is known for its picturesque beauty and is a hikers haven. Every summer, Moosalp takes the spotlight for its Alpine farmers’ festival. Visitors can interact with local farmers and take part in a colourful parade that tells folktales. Traditional cow fights and the cow parade to their pastures is a beautiful sight to see. If you are around till nightfall, you could also watch them come back to their stables.

Street-side fun at Zurich

Zurich will hold its 25th version of the annual giant street party that is know as the Street Parade. The festival is just what its name suggests – a party on the streets. Dance, music and revelry, the Street Parade has it all for the party animals. The young and the old, people from across the world, meet them all on the streets of Zurich in the month of August. A day long muscial parade, the festival throws up more than 7 stages and has 600 DJ’s hosting events.
